Boston November 14: 1680


Sr

I am honr d with yors of the 14th of Augt and thereby understand
how much Mr Harris mistooke his ransome, and yor ready and Charita
ble care to advance ye same proposed, What is now Demanded cannot
readily be raised out of his Estate, though much more valuable, neither
have any of his friends that are willing to Contribute either money
in England or any Certaine way in soe short a tyme to p[ro]cure it
there, A faire opportunity being slipd for an order for ye Indian Corpo
ration Money due in March, upon ye Intelligence of Mr Harris his
Exportacón, and yor supply of what then was thought sufficient
Neither hath ye Collony of Conecticott any [Banced] or Certaine
Creditt to Express their just intentions upon this [Exigent Soe yt]
Except Mr Doane upon the Letter now sent him [Lend] ye Managr
or some other p[er]son be moved with compassion, and give creditt
to Conecticott Collony or those that Ingage to Mr Doane, Mr Harris
must remaine in captivity till more effectuall means can be found
for his Inlargemt ; The security tended to Mr Doane is good, and
the Ingagemt of the Collony of Conecticott may be Depended on,
And if the Interest propounded be too Short the Ingagemt offerd Mr
Doan [Rises] to 8 [per cent], which shall certainly be made good
if Desired, and payment made in England in too years [illegible] in this
place with ye allowance for Exchange, I see not how any that
have money to spare Can more Charitably or profitably Imploy
it, and if ye security be Doubled it is in yor power to make it more
Certaine, by obligeing Conecticott to what may be satisfactory before
their business be Despatched, Sr Pardon these p[re]sumpcóns which p[ro]ceed
from my [illegible] zeale and Incapacity to p[er]forme what is recommended
to yor goodness and Charity, In case Mr Doane fayle, one Mr Small
that seems much Concernd for Mr Harris will wayt upon yw for [illegible]
in his behalfe

The Pacquett and papers under yor Cover are Conveyd, and soe many
of the Narrogansett proprietr s as are p[re]sent acquainted with their
obligation to yor selfe in ye [Caveat] already given, and ye recomendation
promised. My Lord Culpepper when here was pleased to acqt: himselfe
with our p[re]tentions and peticón to his Maty and what his Lordp thought
needfull was then p[re]pared, and Duplicates given to him, ye originalls
misd conveyance and will with this its hoped come to Mr Doan [illegible]
hands, and suddenly to yor s, My Lord Culpepper hath been 33 Dayes upon
his voyage - upon arivall he will be able to give a p[er]fect accompt of ye
publique state of thes Collonyes and Contraversyes that [came Derision]
If in any thing I may be serviceable to ye Interest under yor Inspiration or
yor selfe yr Comands will be Cheerfully entertained and obeyd by
